Hike and Swim – Five mountains to climb near beaches

April 5, 2017

If you’re looking to relax at the beach after a tiring day hike, then these beginner friendly mountains are perfect to suit your needs. Best of all, they’re all within driving distance from Manila.

1. Mt. Pundaquit and Anawangin Cove

  • Location: San Antonio, Zambales
  • Around 4 hours from Manila

Mt. Pundaquit

  • Minor Climb, Difficulty 3/9
  • 4-5 Hour Hike
  • Jump off: Brgy. Pundaquit, San Antonio

Because majority of the trail is exposed, your two best options for avoiding the extreme heat would be either climbing very early in the morning or late in the afternoon.  Climbing before sunrise is ideal if you intend to make the most of your day but be sure to bring headlamps as the trail will be dark. We started at around 6:30 am and by the time we were close to reaching the summit, the heat was already unbearable.

Anawangin Cove

Anawangin cove is a popular camping site with many opting to stay there for the night after the tiring hike.  There are also shower areas if you need to freshen up and change into your beach outfits.

Getting back to Pundaquit requires riding a boat back. Make sure you already informed your boatman, prior to your hike, to fetch you at Anawangin Cove. Don’t forget to stop by Capones island.

2. Mt. Gulugod Baboy and Sombrero Island

  • Location: Anilao, Batangas
  • 3  hours away from Manila

Mt. Gulugod Baboy

  • Minor Climb, Difficulty 2/9
  • 3-4 hour hike
  • Jump Off: Brgy. Ligaya, Anilao Batangas

Reaching the summit would normally take two hours and starting early would give you enough time to visit Sombrero Island. The steep cemented road at the very start of the climb is actually the most difficult part. After that, it gets easier with views getting nicer and nicer as you work your way up the mountain. Once you’re finally there, you would be rewarded with a 360 degree view of Anilao, Batangas.

Sombrero Island

Sombrero island is just a short 15-20 minute boat ride from Anilao. The boat rental fee is a bit steep at around Php 2,500 which makes it an expensive side trip for small groups.

3. Mt. Hugom and Laiya Beach

  • Location: San Juan, Batangas
  • Around 3.5 hours away from Manila

Mt. Hugom

  • Minor Climb, Difficulty 3/9
  • 2.5-4 hour hike
  • Jump Off: Brgy. Hugom, San Juan

Since this is a relatively new hiking trail, we came rather unprepared to tackle the mostly uphill path to the summit. It took us twice as long to climb and descend the mountain but it was a challenge worth taking. The final assault to the summit is the steepest portion but once you’re up, you will be greeted with a view of Laiya.

Laiya Beach

Laiya beach is the perfect side trip after hiking Mt. Hugom. A number of resorts are lined up along the beach, but since Laiya is also a popular beach destination, most of the resorts are fully booked during weekends. If you’re planning to stay overnight, we suggest to book your room ahead of time.

4. Mt. Bira-Bira and Nagsasa Cove

  • Location: San Antonio, Zambales
  • Around 4 hours from Manila

Mt. Bira-Bira

  • Minor Climb, Difficulty 3/9
  • 3-4 hour hike
  • Jump Off: Sitio San Martin, Subic

Similar to Mt. Pundaquit’s trail, Mt. Bira-Bira’s trail is also exposed and starting early is a good decision. If you want to know more about our experience, read our Mt. Bira-Bira post for more information.

Nagsasa Cove

Nagsasa cove is farther compared to Anawangin cove so expect your boat rental fee back to Pundaquit to cost you more. Similar to Anawangin, it’s also a popular place for camping but the crowd may be less due to its distance from Pundaquit.

5. Mt. Tibig and Lobo Beach

  • Location: Lobo, Batangas
  • 3+  hours away from Manila

Important note: Mt. Tibig is now closed to mountaineers. But there are other mountains to choose from within Lobo. Since we haven’t hiked any of the alternative mountains, we’re unable to provide an overview of the trail.

Mt. Tibig Alternatives

  1. Mt. Banoi
    • Minor climb, Difficulty 3/9
    • 3-5 hour hike
  2. Mt. Lobo (not recommended for beginners)
    • Minor climb, Difficulty 4/9
    • 4-5 hours to summit
  3. Mt. Naguiling (not recommended for beginners)
    • Major climb, Difficulty 5/9
    • 4-7 hours to summit

Lobo Beach Resorts

Apart from the beaches in Lobo, the Malabrigo lighthouse is also a popular sidetrip after hiking one of Lobo’s mountains. There are a couple of resorts to choose from if you’re looking to spend the night. We, however, chose to stay at Punta Verde resort mainly because of it’s infinity pool.

Some of the other resorts in Lobo are:

  1. Punta Malabrigo Beach Resort
  2. Andrea Beach and scuba diving Resort
  3. Submarine Garden Beach Resort
  4. Harisa Beach Resort
  5. Almalin Beach Resort
  6. Lily Beach Resort
  7. Lawas Seaside Resort
